Corrina Gordon-Barnes : School teacher to professional coach...
I was working as a teacher when I first started reading The Work We Were Born To Do. It was a time of internal conflict for me. I loved working with young people yet couldn't bear to see their natural thirst for learning squashed by the exam-driven curriculum. I kept getting run down with glandular illnesses which I recognised as signs from my body that I wasn't speaking my truth.
But how to have the courage to leave?
I met you, Nick, at an Alternatives event a couple of years earlier and felt an immediate connection thanks to the down-to-earth, friendly conversation we'd shared. Your book had sat patiently on my shelf since then and now its golden cover was calling me.
As soon as I started reading, I felt held and supported. There was such a consistently loving tone - gentle and reassuring, yet urging into action. The philosophy underpinning your approach made sense to me and I was continually inspired by the quotations because they said to me: If so many people think this way, surely it's okay! The exercises you included challenged me and led me to insights about what I really wanted and who, fundamentally, I really was.
Three years on, I run a successful coaching business called You Inspire Me (www.youinspireme.co.uk).
I support inspirational young women in turning their ideas into action so that the world gets to benefit from their passions. My fear of never again working with young people was squashed. I home-tutored and did supply teaching through the early stages of business building and teenagers are now among my clients. Instead of teaching them English, I'm helping them to develop their self-awareness and increase their self-esteem.
Nick, you've been instrumental in getting me to this place of professional fulfilment. I've revisited that golden book on many occasions along the way, as well as attending a workshop and tele-class that you ran. By holding that vision that we can - and MUST! - do the work we were born to do, you gave me the space to believe it for myself, and then prove it to myself and others.
Your work is so, so necessary and I wish you ever increasing success.
